Game meat – 7 very good reasons why you should eat it

Game meat

1. It’s very lean

Game meat is one of the healthiest lean meats available. It is very low in saturated fat and cholesterol, giving it far more nutritional value.

Game birds and animals are wild and enjoy the freedom to walk, run, roam, forage and fly from potential predators. As a result they do not store so much fat as their counter part farmed animals and birds.

2. It contains good fats

The fat that is in game meat is the healthy fat, Omega-3. Most people will think of salmon when you hear Omega-3, however wild game such as venison has an optimum ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids. This makes game meat a much healthier source of good fat.

3. It’s nutrient rich

All game meat is very high in Iron and contains higher levels of many beneficial nutrients including vitamin E, Beta Carotene, Zinc Vitamin B(6) and Selenium. A lack Selenium in our diet can lead to fatigue and even a weakened immune system. Selenium also helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Pheasant is particularly high in selenium.

4. It’s super high in protein

Pheasant, grouse and partridge all contain a higher level of protein than that of chicken and pork, and venison also contains more protein than that found in beef. Quite simply if you want a healthier source of high protein meat, then look no further than game meat.

5. It’s ethical and sustainable

There is an abundance of game birds and animals here in the UK and all are 100% free range (all game meat here at Up Ur Game is from the Britsh countryside). Game birds and animals do not suffer slaughterhouse stress that intensively farmed animals endure and the carbon footprint of game meat is massivley lower than intensively farmed animals due to game being a natural product.

6. It’s 100% additive free

Game birds and animals are completely free of antibiotics, growth hormones or any other additives often administered to intensively farmed animals. It has been suggested by reasearchers the excessive use of antibiotics in farming could be a contributing factor in human resistance to antibiotics.

7. It’s delicious and easy to cook

Being wild, game birds and animals eat a wide and varied diet and this is why it is so flavoursome. It’s easy to cook and perfect for mid-week meals, in fact pheasant is a perfect replacment for chicken in any chicken based meal! Game is also fantastic for curries as the deeper flavour of game meat is a great match for spices – check out our delicious Pheasant Thai Green Curry recipe video here.
